Speaking for IELTS Part 2 - A place near water you visited
About a month ago I went to Lake Superior with some friends for the weekend. It’s the largest lake in North America, and I think it’s the biggest fresh-water lake in the world, although I’m not one hundred percent sure if I remember that correctly, but it is enormous, and it even crosses the border into Canada as well. We were in a place called Bayfield, in Wisconsin, by the side of the lake so we could go swimming and kayaking and other stuff.
As I said, we went there for a long weekend and it was great fun. My friend comes from there so for her it was like going home for the weekend. We met some of her friends too and went to some of the places she hadn’t been to for a while. We stayed at her mother’s house so that was nice and it was really homey and comfortable.
On the morning after we arrived, we went out on Lake Superior in a canoe and paddled around for about an hour or so – it was an incredible view from out on the water and we took some amazing photos while we were out there.
Then we came back in and had lunch at a small restaurant near the harbor, which was delicious. In the afternoon we strolled around town for a while and saw some of the local places, and then in the evening we went to a party my friend’s cousin was having – it was near at the side of the lake near an old cabin that belonged to their family, so it was really nice. There was a nice breeze coming off the lake at night so it was nice and fresh and cool.
Speaking for IELTS Part 3 Discussion Questions
WaterDid you take a lot of photos there?
Yes, we took some photos of the lake, others when we were out on the lake and a load of photos throughout the time we spent there. Some of them were like landscape shots and others were just of the places we saw and people we met over the weekend while we were there visiting.
Do you have a photo of that place at home?
No, not like a photo in a frame or anything like that. I have all the photos we took stored on my computer and in the cloud so I can look at them or share them with anyone whenever I want.
Do you think clean water is important for people? Why?
Absolutely, without clean water to drink and cook and wash, life would be very difficult, probably even impossible for many people. Clean drinking water is essential just to survive, but we use clean water for all kinds of things.
If the water was polluted or contaminated then we probably wouldn’t be able to use it for crop irrigation or cooking or food preparation. Clean water is an absolute necessity for humans – just look at the problems that a drought causes, you see it on the news – it’s a serious problem when there’s no water or no clean water.
What is the reason for shortage of clean water in the world?
There are various causes for this happening. First, there’s global warming, or climate change, whatever you want to call it – the earth’s temperature is heating up and that causes increased evaporation of surface water.
Then, there’s the fact that underground sources of fresh water have been pumped dry in some places, there’s less rainfall in certain regions now which obviously produces less water overall.
And then there’s water sources which become polluted and can’t be used to extract clean drinking water anymore. The current water shortage is predicted to get worse throughout this century unless a solution is found and some say that water will become even more valuable than oil or gold in the future because it will be so scarce – yet it is essential for life.
