Why Older Adults Use Social Media Less Than Younger People
It's no secret that social media use has exploded in recent years, particularly among younger adults. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 90% of adults aged 18 to 29 use at least one form of social media, compared to just 56% of adults aged 65 and older. But why is this the case? Let's take a closer look at some of the reasons why older adults might be less likely to use social media.
1. They're not as familiar with social media platforms
Older adults didn't grow up with social media as younger people did, so they may not be as familiar with how to use different platforms or how to navigate them. This can make them feel uncomfortable or even intimidated by social media, causing them to stay away altogether.
2. They don't see the point
Many older adults simply don't see the appeal of social media and don't understand why people spend so much time on it. For them, it's a waste of time that could be better spent doing something else.
3. They're worried about privacy and security
With all the news stories about data breaches and online scams, it's no wonder that older adults are hesitant to jump on the social media bandwagon. They may be worried about their personal information being compromised or being targeted by scammers.
So, there you have it — three of the main reasons why older adults are less likely to use social media than younger people.
Of course, this doesn't mean that ALL older adults avoid social media; there are plenty of tech-savvy seniors out there who are active on various platforms.
But overall, the trend is clear that younger people are more likely to embrace social media than their elder counterparts.
